16 June 2022
It's been a jam-packed June as we wind-up two month's back-to-back intense Bowls competition including District, State & National Championships
It has been an extremely busy two months at the club with major events taking place. The club has successfully hosted the Australian Championships and Australian Champion of Champion Singles, Queensland District Sides, Queensland Championships, Blue Diamond Pairs, Matador Fours & The Australian Open.
The effort from the Board, Staff & Volunteers has been amazing and we've only heard good reports on all events. The greens were amazing for the Australian Open, especially after all the rain during the State Championships. The commonly heard phrase from all Interstate was "we hope we get drawn at Broadbeach”
There was a fantastic effort made by Broadbeach Bulls players in all Championships with them taking home gold in many titles:
Nick Cahill and Kelsey Cottrell won the State Mixed Pairs
Nick Cahill and Aron Sherriff won the State Triples
Val Jackson and Anne McClure won the State Fours
Kelsey Cottrell won the State Singles
Bolivia Millerick won the Australian Singles
Aron Sherriff and Nick Cahill won the Australian Triples
Sean Ingham and Aron Sherriff won the Australian Pairs
Kelsey Cottrell won the Australian Open Singles, Fours and Player of the Tournament
Aron Sherriff won the Australian Open Singles.
The Blue Diamond was a very successful Pairs Tournament. It is one of the strongest fields in Australia. Aron Sherriff and Sean Ingham won the tournament; international players Matt Baus and Jeremy Henry ran second with Kane Nelson and Bolivia Millerick coming third. Our first Matador Fours was also a success getting 38 fours teams. It was won by Nick Cahill’s rink with Aron Sherriff and Sean Ingham’s rink coming in second. We have great hopes and interest for this tournament next year and are confident we can attract 56 teams, which will make one of the biggest fours tournaments in Australia.
The club's focus now turns to the Pennant Season. The Ladies are going for another State Number 1 flag and will be putting two teams in - Division 1 and hopefully a Division 3 team - games played on Saturday mornings. Last year the Mens teams made all six grand finals, winning four of them. We've put in for six divisions this year - 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. In the intervening year some top bowlers have joined the club and so we'll be looking to have another very successful season.
The Champion of Champions events are coming up for the district. Our club championships are down to the business end and should be finished in the next fortnight.
We're set for another big winter of social bowls and are expecting the pairs to be full each Tuesday and Thursday. The triples should see them getting onto three greens.
The Blue Ribbon sheet has gone up and is already over half full so we should get 56 teams to compete in the competition being held Sunday, 14 - Monday 15, August.
Congratulations to Serena Bonnell on getting picked for the Australian Commonwealth Games Team and Ryan Bester who has been picked for the Canadian team due to compete in Birmingham at the end of July.
Finally our special thanks goes out to Peter Lambert, Dennis Margan and Christina Pavlov for all their hard work during all the tournaments - they are truly outstanding and to all Umpires and Markers who helped out at the Open, nothing but good things have been said about all our Volunteers. Congratulations to everyone who played, participated, organised, volunteered and facilitated the smooth running and success of the last couple of months.
